Scoring Judge reviews hockey goal scoring sequences using video replay. With available video we determine who scored, who assisted and whether the goal crossed the line.
Video Review:
Our highlights are written out as a description of the sequence of events that lead to the goal. We have the luxury of video that we can slow down and critique it over and over again. Video review is not possible on the ice for minor hockey referees.
Video is not perfect, the videos usually have just one angle and are sometimes not conclusive. When determining goal stats we are limited by the quality of the video. For example:
Redirections and tips are often very difficult to determine unless there is a clear change of direction.
If the net is knocked out of place or the whistle is blown or the horn the goes, goals don't count.
If the video has no volume, or no close-up, often we cannot make any determination.
In a scrum or scrabble for the puck it can be very difficult to determine if a particular player touched the puck.
We don't have overhead camera angles therefor we cannot assess some goal line situations.
This site is NOT designed to dispute the hard work of the on ice officials and or score keepers. Whenever we can not be conclusive based on video, we use the scoresheet for facts.
Sample Video and Description:
Points Allocation:
We follow NHL rules on points scoring allocation. We look at video to determine who touched the puck prior to the goal. Primary and secondary assists are assigned unless unassisted because of a turnover / recovery prior to the goal. Secondary assists will not be assigned if a turnover / recovery happens between the primary and secondary options.
Four things to note about assists:
Not every goal will have an assist – if there is no pass to the player who has scored, and the goal scorer simply got the puck himself before scoring then no assist will be awarded
Not every goal will have a secondary assist – if there are not two passes before the goal is scored and only one after a change of possession and the goal then only one assist will be given
There is only a maximum of two assists per goal.
Multiple passes between the goal scorer and primary assister does not nullify a secondary assist.
Suggestions or Modifications:
Any modification suggestions can be submitted to [email protected] with a suggested written sequence. We will review the suggestion and modify our records if we agree. We cannot "take your word or your kids word for it". The video must support your descriptive sequence. If you have another video angle, submit it in your email.
If we don't agree, we will not modify and we have no obligation to respond in any way.
